I read a GREAT book this month by John Furhman, called “Reject Me, I Love It!” and for this month, we are using this book to share some tips on how important it is as working moms to have PERSERVERANCE in our business!

One of Fuhrman’s Rejection secrets, what if you believed…
You ARE A Wonderful Person!?

As Furhman states, and I agree, we fear rejection because we take it as a personal insult, that it has something to do with or about us!. The truth is that in most rejection cases, it has nothing to do with us.

When I coach moms we usually find the real fears are in “our stories”, or what we believe to be true about ourselves. So…if we believe “people don’t like us or won’t like the product/service that we sell”, then anytime we get rejected, we use that as proof that our story is true!

So as a new challenge… what if we decided to create a NEW STORY in our mind that says “I am liked, well received and LOTS of people LOVE my product/service”. What do you think will happen? Are you willing to try it?

Another tip Furhman suggests, read a personal development book for 15 minutes a day-when you decide to start on a journey of self discovery, the personal and professional rewards can be endless. It can help you develop new skills to acheive your goals and a new awareness of yourself and others! Before you know it, your confidence is higher, your heart is more open and accepting, and your fears may no longer hold you back.

What have you got to loose? Let the world receive all the wonderful things YOU have to offer! Have an “Attitude of Grattitude” to see that rejection can be a gift given to us to learn and grow.

Persistenly yours,
Savvy Mom Marci

This month’s book is ”A Woman’s Guide to Successful Negotiating; How to Convince, Collaborate & Create Your Way to Agreement”, by Lee E. Miller and Jessica Miller.

It’s FULL of great tips, tools, and suggestions for our August topic, Negotiating!

Join us at our local chapters to receive your copy of our handout, 10 Ways to AVOID the Most Common Mistakes Women Make In Negotiating!

How many of you feel like you are on the top of your game when it comes to negotiating?

If you answered a confident, “Yes”, Way to go,  you are one of the brave and one of the few women to master this skill!

If you answered anything but yes, Congratulations to you too! You are among many of women today who were not taught the tricks of the negotiating game.

In fact, you were most likely taught through family upbringing and society that “it’s not polite to ask for more than what you get”, or that “rules are meant to be followed, not broken”.

Well this month, I encourage you to BREAK the RULES and Challenge old beliefs that, in my opinion, HOLD YOU BACK and KEEP YOU PLAYING SMALL

I invite you to open the door to new perspectives and possibilities in playing the game of life as abundantly as you can!

How?….Well, we can start by just that, ASK!!!  Adopt a new mantra to live by: “It Never hurts to ask!”

This is one major mistake women make in negotiating, We DO NOT ASK!

Permission to speak in general for a moment?  For the most part, women want to be liked.  In negotiating, women assume that when someone gives us an offer,  it is the best, most fair offer they can give. So generally, women choose to either accept the offer or not accept it; and that is the extent of our negotiating.

It reminds me of a memory I have.  When I was 13 years old, my mom, aranged for my first summer babysitting  job with one of her co-workers. When it came to figuring out my pay, she took care of my negotiating because never working before, I didn’t know what to charge.

My mom (bless her heart)  did her best to handle negotiating my pay. She said to her friend, “Just pay Marci what you think is fair”. Now I’ll admit, the truth of this story gets a little distorted (as all good stories do) but the story I remember was that her friend paid me about $2 an hour to watch her FOUR kids!  Not four angels mind you, four trouble makers!

After a week of watching them as they terrorized me, their animals, and their house, I finally said to my mom “this is not worth the money I am getting paid!” I remember her words echoing in my head, “Oh Marci, lets not offend her by saying anything. She picked the price she thought was fair, so lets just leave it at that”, ”You should be grateful that you have that job earning extra money”!

I remember as clear as day how that situation and her response made me “feel”.  Now in mom’s defense, she was doing the best she knew how at that moment and I do not blame her one bit for that sitaution, in fact I am so GRATEFUL for it! Because,  what I discovered from that experience was that I have held onto that “belief” throughout a huge part of my adult life!  By holding onto it and  believing it to be true, time after time it prevented me from asking for what I REALLY wanted because I was afraid I would offend someone or I would look ungrateful for what was being offered to me.

It sent an internal message for years that my needs weren’t as important as other people’s needs.  WOW, do you think that held me back from abundance and opportunities? By “seeing it” and “owning it”, I experienced a  HUGE  breakthrough in my negotiating skills and thankfully I have chosen new beliefs to live into that serve me better.

So use my story as inspiration and motivation to ask yourself: What stories or belifes are you holding onto that aren’t serving you any more in terms of Negotiating?

The gift is that once we receive answers for ourselves, it can lead us to see where we may be pushing current opportunities and abundance away! And by choosing to replace the old belifes with new, more supportive beliefs we can shift not only our life’s experiences, but our children’s, too!

What are some other tips?

Here are 3 Successful Keys to Winning the Negotiating Game:

1.      Be Confident – whatever you say, say it with confidence!

2.      Be Prepared – gather all the necessary information to help you; know your goals, your objectives, and your ideal outcomes with a range of possibilities.

3.      Be Willing to Walk Away – if you must have something to give you the courage to walk away; adopt the philosophy that “no deal is better than a bad deal”!

And remember, just like anything new or unfamiliar in life; the only way to fail is to Never Even Try!

Article By: Marci Tjader, SMN Founder & the “Savvy Mom” Coach

When I worked in the corporate world, I had small perks I received based on my position; usually free lunches and sports tickets from vendors who wanted to build influential relationships. It wasn’t until recently looking back that I became aware of the prestige, confidence, and significance I thought those perks gave me.

Things shifted in my life and the beautiful gift of motherhood came. All of a sudden, I was in charge of a whole new set of prestigious honors. Ones that revolved around nursing, decoding baby cries, leading my child to her first steps, and explaining to her how choices render consequences in life.

Then I added icing on the cake by becoming an entrepreneur. Where I no longer have the prestigious paychecks or annual bonuses to count on and where my road less traveled is paved with dreams of no glass ceilings and more rewarding lifestyles without sacrificing family time.

No matter where you are in your stage of being a mom or in your career, this month we have an opportunity to redefine our value as moms/business owners in a way that goes beyond our actual bank account balance or prestigious position we hold.

Email me at mtjader@cox.net to receive a Complimentary Conference Call recording where “Dr Beth” a Parent/Teen Psychologist/Coach and Marci the “Savvy Mom” Coach lead us to ’see’ and ‘own’ our value whether it’s in the form of a paycheck or life’s countless blessings.

Join Us this month at our Arizona Networking Events discussing the Topic: “Overcoming BIG Challenges” to learn how to take the challenges we face in business to new heights and victorious outcomes!

June’s Topic of the Month is “Overcoming BIG Challenges”
Book: “Birthing the Elephant” by Karin Abarbanel & Bruce Freeman

How can we Overcome BIG Challenges? One way is to, “Find Your Business Rhythm”

Many of us had BIG visions when we started our own business, now, your business may seem to evolve into a life force of it’s own. Here are some rhythms you may come accross and what you can expect to feel during each stage. Just remember, hang on and “enjoy the ride!”

The “Re-Defining” Process-
A process that you may encounter many times in your business life cycle; challenging you to recognize it & take advantage of it to push your business in new and more promising directions.

“Been There, Done That” Phase-
Sometimes at this stage you feel as if your business has been running you through an
“eat-sleep-work, eat-sleep-work, eat-sleep, work” cycle.
Forget the Profits, you want the perks! Alas, you are in the beginning stage, it wont last like this forever.

Put the “Pedal to the Metal” Stage-
As your business consumes more of your time, the toll it takes on your personal life can intensify. It’s easy to push yourself into the red zone, but pay attention and find ways to re-energize yourself while you’re here, otherwise the strains of this intense force will zap you out physically and emotionally.

“Financial Anxiety” Juncture-
If you’ve let your new business prospecting take a back seat, then you may find yourself scrambling for new clients, and funds to keep things going. Being zealous in your efforts to continually generate new business will help you see sustained results and get you out of this financial crunch.

“More Confidence”-
FINALLY, you can see the silver lining! The groundwork you’ve laid during your launch phase is paying off, despite the ups and downs, you’re likely to feel more confident about your chances of survival and success. The last months you’ve gained a gold mine of new experience and newfound expertise-allow yourself to bask in the glory of each success!

We have so many “valued” members in our group. Introducing our February Mom in the Spotlight

Amy Robertson, Always Busy Women

Tell us about your family. I have been married for 9 years to a wonderful and supporting husband, Rob, who I am very thankful for. I have two kids, Zack who is 12 and Kalli, who is 8. I have 3 dogs, a golden retriever named Ranger, a mixed black lab named Maggie and my newest member Lucy who is a basset hound.

Why did you decide to choose your business/career? I went into business for myself eight years ago for one reason, which was to be able to have more time with my children and family. This continues to be my focus as well as building a business that will benefit them when they grow up.

What is one success tip you’d like to share with other working moms? Stay focused and never stop learning!

How has networking helped your business? I would’ve never been able to launch my current business and have the resources and support that I have without networking.

What is your favorite saying/inspirational quote/motto? This is so hard, because there are so many but my favorite since I was a teenager is “Always take time to stop and smell the flowers”

What is one praise/kudos you’d like to celebrate? I would like to celebrate and praise all the wonderful women in business around me! You go girls!

What is the best lead for you this month? Women in business who are interested in growing their business by becoming part of a network that helps you grow your business 24/7.

We have so many “valued” members in our group. Introducing our January Mom in the Spotlight

Mona Colwell, Independent Sales Director with Mary Kay

Tell us about your family. My husband, Emerson, Jr., and I have been married for 11 years. We have three beautiful children age 5, three and 1 ½ years old.

Why did you decide to choose your business/career? I started my business 13 years ago while working as a Financial Analyst for a securities firm in NYC. At the time, I was planning to go back to school for my MBA and I needed to save about $10,000 so I could qualify for loans to finance the $60,000 program. Saving from my current job was going to be tough (I pretty much was living pay check to paycheck) and I knew I needed to find an additional source of income. I was using Mary Kay skin care products through my cousin and knew a little about the business from her. After exploring lots of job opportunities, I chose to start a Mary Kay business because it was flexible, there were no quotas, I could work as much or little as possible and, as a brand new consultant, I was earning $25- to $50- per hour.

What is one success tip you’d like to share with other working moms? I have always been consistent with investing time into building my business. My life today may seem much different than when I started my business – single with no kids versus married with 3 kids – but it really isn’t that different at all. I just budget my time differently but the amount of time I can spend on my business today is about the same as when I started. The most important thing I have always done is create yearly goals for my business, break them down into monthly and weekly goals then determine my daily activities necessary to reach my goals. Some days, weeks and years may not turn out as grand as I had planned, but having this daily plan and being consistent has allowed me to continuously grown my business from year to year.

How has networking helped your business? Building a business is all about building relationships. Networking events provide an opportunity to meet a bunch of people all at one time which is great for those people without a lot of extra time!

What is your favorite saying/inspirational quote/motto? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

What is one praise/kudos you’d like to celebrate? For the past six months, I have been building a Professional Women’s Network Portfolio to showcase women and their businesses. This free advertising is one of the ways I can thank you for taking the time to check out Mary Kay products. We currently have over 40 women in the Network and are excited to hit 100 in the next couple of months!

What is the best lead for you this month? The best part of my business is that anyone who has skin could benefit from getting together with me. I teach women all about skin care products, taking care of their skin and applying color cosmetics. Mary Kay has been the best selling brand of skin care & color for the past 13 years, my services are totally complimentary and the products have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Any woman who wants to learn anything about her face, taking care of her skin and/or wearing makeup would truly enjoy checking out Mary Kay products.

What’s your contact info for people to reach you? Mona V. Colwell, 623-271-8992 or 401-286-2650.
